The Company

AI Proteins is a Boston-based biotechnology company focused on the de novo design and engineering of miniprotein therapeutics. We combine cutting-edge computational protein design and artificial intelligence with synthetic biology and laboratory robotics to accelerate the creation of life-changing medicines. Our common goal is to markedly improve human health and well-being. Our environment is rigorous and collaborative, bringing together passionate individuals who are making an impact. We inspire creativity by embracing an open culture that fosters initiative, teamwork, and excellence.

Position Summary

AI Proteins is seeking a highly motivated and self-driven Research Associate to support the manufacturing of miniproteins for internal and external preclinical & developability studies. The candidate will also work closely with members of our Bioprocess Development team to support the development of upstream and downstream bioprocesses. They will help to perform and optimize protocols that can be transferred to external facilities for the large-scale production of miniproteins. The position is ideal for a candidate looking to expand their expertise on protein expression and protein purification processes using different expression hosts.

Responsibilities

Areas of specific responsibility and attention will include the following:

  • Production of purified miniproteins to be used for in vitro and in vivo experiments across different internal and external programs. This includes:
    • DNA cloning, DNA sequence analysis, microbial lysate preparation, and strain development in yeast and bacteria
    • Set up, operation, and maintenance of the upstream lab equipment such as bioreactors, and metabolite and nutrient analyzers
    • Operation and maintenance of downstream bioprocess-related equipment, such as homogenizers, fast performance liquid chromatography (FPLC) and tangential-flow filtration (TFF) systems.
    • Purification of miniproteins and bioconjugates via multiple chromatographic techniques.
  • Support characterization of miniproteins to assess sample quality and purity such as SDS-PAGE, size exclusion chromatography-high pressure liquid chromatography (SEC-HPLC) and reverse phase-high pressure liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC).
  • Prepare internal reports, presentations, protocols and technical documents for internal use.
  • Perform routine maintenance of lab equipment required for the expression and purification of miniproteins.
  • Participate in internal team meetings by actively engaging in scientific and technical discussions.
  • Make contributions to build and maintain a positive, team-oriented biotech culture.

Professional Experience / Qualifications

The ideal candidate has solid knowledge on the production of recombinant proteins from protein expression to final purification chromatographic processes. Specific required qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, or other relevant science.
  • Candidates should have a solid theoretical understanding in microbial culture (bacteria and yeast)  and protein purification techniques (e.g. affinity chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, etc.).
    • Experience with RP-HPLC and SEC-HPLC (preferred but not required).
  • Candidates with experience in relevant techniques for the expression and purification of recombinant proteins are highly encouraged to apply.
  • The candidate should have a strong understanding of DNA cloning techniques such as PCR, golden gate and Gibson assembly.
  • Strong communication skills:  Effective cross-functional communicator, able to convey complex concepts and strategies in writing and presentations; receptive to diverse input and feedback.
  • Talented problem solver:  Strategic problem solver, self-directed, scientifically rigorous, and capable of carrying out complex technical projects.
  • Highly energetic:  Adaptable and proactive, able to thrive in dynamic settings, respond flexibly to change, and drive progress with creativity and determination.
